The Bilafond La , in German "Bilafond Pass", also called Saltoro Pass or "Pass of the Butterflies", is a high mountain pass in the Saltoro Mountains , located west of the Siachen Glacier , around 40 with a peak height of 5,450 meters above sea level km north of the geographic coordinate point NJ 980420.

The Line of Control , which marks the border between India and Pakistan, lies on the Siachen Glacier . The pass is located in the eastern Karakoram .

Importance of the passport

The Bilafond La is not far from the Sia La and Gyong La passes . These three passes were occupied during Operation Meghdoot by the Indian Army in the Siachen conflict on April 13, 1984. This armed conflict is part of the Kashmir conflict between India and Pakistan, which has been smoldering since 1947 . Due to the important strategic location of this pass, Pakistan tried since 1984 to drive out the Indian armed forces with little success. The most famous attack was carried out in 1987 by Pervez Musharraf , the future President of Pakistan, with Pakistani special forces, supported by US special forces. This special force of 8,000 men was formed in Khaplu . They conquered the Bilafond La only temporarily and were thrown back to their original position in a face-to-face battle.

Inspection of the pass

In 1976 a Japanese expedition led by H. Misawa crossed the Bilafond Pass and climbed Apsarasas I for the first time with seven other mountaineers . In 1980 Americans skied the Karakoram in the direction of the Bilafond Glacier on the east-west traverse and crossed it. 1980 and some trekkers went over the pass from the west. In September 1983 an Indian women's team crossed the pass with Bachendri Pal. Seven climbers from Japan climbed the Singhi Kangri over the Staghar Glacier . They had to climb the Bilafond Pass and the Turkestan La from Pakistan. In 1981 an expedition of the Indian army led by Colonel N. Kumar reached the upper glaciers over the Nubra Valley . They climbed the Saltoro Kangri I, Sia Kangri I, reached the Indira Col (West), the Sia La , the Turkestan La and the Bilafond Pass.
