The Sauterriegel is a highly subdivided mountain in Queen Maud's East Antarctic land . It rises up immediately to the east of the Mayr range and forms the southeastern part of Gjelsvikfjella . Its highest peak is the Terningen with 2680 m .
It was discovered and named during the German Antarctic Expedition in 1938/39 under the direction of polar explorer Alfred Ritscher . It is named after Siegfried Sauter (1916–2008), aerial photographer and participant in this research trip. Norwegian cartographers map the mountain based on surveys and aerial photographs of the Norwegian-British-Swedish Antarctic Expedition (1949–1952) and the Third Norwegian Antarctic Expedition (1956–1960). In Norway, it bears the name Terningskarvet ( Norwegian for matrices mountain )
