Terra Formars ( Japanese テ ラ フ ォ ー マ ー ズ , Tera Fōmāzu ) is a manga series by Yū Sasuga and Ken'ichi Tachibana . It has been released in Japan since 2011 and has been adapted in the form of two animes and a real film. The work is about the fight of humans against mutated cockroaches on Mars and can be classified into the genres of science fiction and horror .

After mankind began in the 21st century to make Mars livable using algae and cockroaches ( terraforming ), a first expedition to Mars travels 500 years later. But the crew is attacked and killed by huge, human-like cockroaches. A few years later another expedition is sent. For this, all suitable candidates are operated on in order to implant an additional organ. This, together with the injection of a drug, gives them great fighting power in order to survive against the cockroaches, now known as "terraformars". However, the risks of the operation are high and two thirds of those operated on die. But the second expedition also fails, only two return to earth. One of the two, Shokichi Komachi ( 小 町 小 吉 ), wants to go to Mars one more time and take revenge for his comrades.
Again young people are operated on and equipped to fight the terraformars. Among them Akari Hizamaru ( 膝 丸 燈 ), son of the inventor of the operations.

The manga is written by Yū Sasuga and illustrated by Ken'ichi Tachibana. The first chapter of the manga appeared on January 13, 2011 in the first issue of Miracle Jump magazine , from April 26, 2012 (issue 22–23 / 2012) the series was continued in Weekly Young Jump . The chapters have appeared in 21 anthologies so far. By February 2015, a total of 10 million copies had been sold.
An English translation will be published by Viz Media , a Spanish translation by Editorial Ivréa and Ever Glory Publishing licensed the manga for Taiwan. The manga has been published in German by Tokyopop since November 2014 , and 20 volumes have been published to date.
Anime
For 2014, the Liden Films studio, directed by Hiroshi Hamasaki, produced a two-part original video animation based on the manga. Shogo Yasukawa was in charge of the script and Masanori Shino and Satoshi Kimura did the character design. The anime was released in Japan on August 19, 2014.
The OVA was followed by an anime television series in the fall . It was made in the same studio, also with director Hamasaki and the same character design. The 13 episode first season was shown from September 27, 2014 after midnight (and thus on the previous TV day ) on Tokyo MX , as well as on ABC, CBC, TV Asahi and BS11 with a few days offset . The second season, Terra Formars Revenge , with a further 13 episodes ran from April 2 to June 24, 2016. This was created in collaboration with TYO Animations and directed by Michio Fukuda.
Peppermint Anime and Crunchyroll streamed the anime as a simulcast in the German-speaking area, as well as Crunchyroll in the English and Anime Digital Network in the French-speaking area, in each case with strongly defaced depictions of violence. Crunchyroll also offers an uncensored version of the first season.
On July 24, 2016, the German publisher Kazé Deutschland announced that the rights to the anime had been secured.

criticism
English-language reviews criticize the open racist, sexist and nationalist borrowings in story and drawing. In particular, the representation of the enemy image of the cockroaches as oversized blacks, but also the heroization of German characters with names like Adolf and Eva is viewed critically.
Real film
The work, directed by Takashi Miike , opened in Japanese cinemas on April 29, 2016. Komachi is led by Hideaki Itō , Akita by Emi Takei , Hiruma by Takayuki Yamada , Muto Jin by Tomohisa Yamashita and Dr. Ko Honda played by Shun Oguri .
In Germany the rights are held by Splendid Film .
