Terry Wayne Virts (born December 1, 1967 in Baltimore , Maryland ) is a retired American astronaut .

Astronaut activity

STS-130

On December 5, 2008, his participation in the STS-130 mission as a pilot was announced. The take-off took place on February 8, 2010, the landing on February 22.

ISS expedition 42 and 43

Virts flew the Soyuz TMA-15M spacecraft to the International Space Station on November 23, 2014. He initially worked as a flight engineer for ISS Expedition 42 before taking command of ISS Expedition 43 on March 11, 2015 . He returned to Earth on June 11, 2015. During the second spacecraft mission of Expedition 42 , there was a slight accumulation of water in his EMU helmet. A similar space suit accident happened on July 16, 2013 during the 3rd disembarkation of the ISS expedition 36 in a considerably larger amount with the astronaut Luca Parmitano .

Virts left NASA on August 23, 2016.
