Tessa Violet (born March 20, 1990 in Chicago , Illinois ), also known as meekakitty , is an American musician , vlogger and former model . Violet grew up in the US state of Oregon .

She became known through her YouTube channel, founded in July 2006 , on which she became one of the platform's first celebrities as "meekakitty" through a video diary and music videos she produced. In the early / mid-2010s, when her channel already had around one million subscribers, her success waned significantly, and the release of her own music in the years from 2014 onwards did not meet with great response. In June 2018, however, after changing her musical style, she suddenly regained the attention of a large audience as a musician with the release of the single "Crush". The song has already been played almost 50 million times on YouTube and more than 30 million times on the music streaming platform Spotify (as of September 2019).

Career

Violet began producing videos in 2007 in a school project. On the occasion of a trip to Hong Kong and Thailand , where she worked as a model, she started her video diary. It won $ 100,000 in 2009 while searching for the most commented video on YouTube. She was supported by Ray William Johnson , who ran one of the most famous YouTube channels and was a roommate of Violet's cousin at the time.

After high school , Violet first moved to New York in 2009 . From there she moved to Los Angeles , where she starred in music videos or directed them herself with the help of Maker Studios . For example, she appeared in the band Family Force 5's music video Cray Button in September 2012 .

Together with other YouTube bloggers, Violet went on tour for the first time in Canada and the United States in late 2011.

On March 18, 2014, she released her first solo album Maybe Trapped Mostly Troubled .

In December 2014, she teamed up with YouTube musician Rusty Clanton to form the band People You Know . The two released their first album together, You, Me and Christmas, that same month and toured living rooms in the eastern United States on The Living Room Tour . In July 2015, they completed a comparable tour called the Return of the Living Room Tour for the western United States.

In October 2016 she released an EP Halloway with the single Dream, which had been released a month earlier . She supported all the songs with music videos on her Youtube channel.

In 2018 she announced work on her second album, which was targeted for release in August of that year. The first single, Crush, was released in June 2018. Shortly thereafter, the release plan was changed and further single releases followed with Bad Ideas in November of that year and I Like (the idea of) You in May 2019. In July 2019, Bad Ideas Act One EP was released as an EP, the remixes of the previous one published singles included. In October 2019, the album Bad Ideas was released with 11 songs, including the single Games released in September . To support the release, she went on a US tour with AJR and then on her first independent European tour.

Violet currently lives and works in Nashville , Tennessee, USA .

Nanakitty

Violet works a lot with her friend Shawna Howson. Together they call themselves Nanakitty , which is a trunk word of their channel names Nanalew and Meekakitty . They upload their videos to either Howsons or Violet's YouTube channel. Originally, they wanted to move into a joint home, but neither of them got a visa for each other's state.

They achieved great international fame in October 2011 with a video cover of the song Sail by the American indie rock band Awolnation , which they jointly produced and published on Howson's YouTube channel. It has been viewed over 350 million times (as of May 2020), which is many times the views of the original Awolnation music video.

In early 2012, they toured the United States together.
