Thaddeus Robert Rudolph Mann (born December 4, 1908 in Lemberg , † November 27, 1993 in Cambridge ) was an Austrian biochemist . His main field of work was reproductive biology .

Life

Thaddeus Mann was the son of Wilhelm and Emilia Mann. His brothers were Roman Mann and Kasimir Mann , his uncle the opera singer Josef Mann . He studied medicine at the University of Lviv , where he received his doctorate in medicine in 1935. A year earlier he married Cecilia Lutwak. In 1935, Mann received a Rockefeller Foundation grant and studied at the Molteno Institute at the University of Cambridge . There he obtained the academic degree Ph. D.

From 1937 to 1944 he was funded by a "Beit Memorial Fellowship for Medical Research". During this time he continued to work at the Molteno Institute in Cambridge . Until 1953 worked as a research assistant for the Agricultural Research Council. In 1950 Mann received the Doctor of Science (Sc.D.) From 1953 to 1976 he was director of the ARC Unit of Reproductive Physiology and Biochemistry. From 1967 to 1976 he held the Marshall-Walton Professorship for Physiology and Reproduction.

Thaddeus Mann has received numerous honors and awards for his scientific achievements, including the 1954 Amory Prize of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences . In 1951 he was elected a member of the Royal Society , in 1962 he was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire and in 1980 a foreign member of the Polska Akademia Nauk .

Foundations

For the 100th anniversary of the Academy of Agriculture in Cracow , the Mann couple established the “Cecylia and Tadeusz Mann Foundation”, which provides financial support for young scientists to travel abroad and purchase chemicals, laboratory equipment as well as scientific books and journals. He also founded the “Thaddeus Mann Studentship - Eastern and Central Europe” foundation for students from Poland who study in Cambridge.
