Roman Wilhelm Mann (born October 19, 1911 in Lemberg , Austria-Hungary , † March 11, 1960 in Zakopane , Poland ) was a Polish film architect , architect , painter , draftsman and university teacher .

Life

Roman Wilhelm Mann was the son of Wilhelm and Emilia Mann (née Quest) and was born in Lemberg in 1911 , a town with a majority Polish-speaking population at the time that belonged to Austria-Hungary until 1918 . He was the younger brother of the painter and graphic artist Kasimir Mann and the biochemist Thaddeus Mann , his uncle was the opera singer Josef Mann .

Roman man studied 1930-1935 Architecture at the Technical University in Lviv . During his studies he made sets for exhibitions. In 1938 he completed his studies by studying interior design and stage design at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Vienna. That year he designed the spa hotel in Krynica, including the interior. Between 1939 and 1944 he was a lecturer at the School of Commercial Art in Lviv, from 1945 to 1946 he was director of the blacksmithing department at the State School for Wood in Applied Arts in Zakopane .

From 1946 to 1948 he worked as an architect in the construction office in Katowice; in 1946 he designed the Sosnowiec Brazier Theater. In the following years he worked on conservation and architectural projects for the Diocese of Łódź . He also designed a church in Zgierz and the facade for the Łódź Philharmonic (not realized), as well as the interior of the “Malinowa” hall in the Grand Hotel Łódź. From 1947 to 1960 he was also under contract as a film architect with “Film Polski” and later with the film production in Łódź. From 1951 to 1956 he was professor and head of the interior architecture and design planning department as well as memorial architecture at the University of Fine Arts in Lodz ; from 1953 to 1955 he was appointed local dean of the interior design department.

In 1960 Mann died in Zakopane. He was married to Lidwina (née Müller), a costume designer in the film industry, and had two sons, Marek (1942) (painter, graphic artist, illustrator) and Paul (1945) (archaeologist and filmmaker).
