Thalassia hemprichii is one of two species of plants in the genus Thalassia . The species is an underwater plant and is found in the coastal waters of the Indian and western Pacific Oceans.

description

The rhizomes are stalk-round and have permanent leaf sheaths . The leaves measure 6 to 12 (rarely up to 40) centimeters × 4 to 8 millimeters and are curved. The inflorescence axis of male inflorescences is 2 to 3 inches long. Female inflorescences, however, have no inflorescence axis. The spathe is linear. Male flowers are stalked 2 to 3 inches long. The bracts are elliptical and petaloid. The anthers are elongated. The ovary of the female flowers consists of 6 carpels . The scar branches are 1 to 1.5 centimeters long. The fruits are 2 to 2.5 × 1.8 × 3.2 centimeters in size and greenish.

Occurrence

Thalassia hemprichii grows submerged in shallow coastal waters from the Red Sea to the Indian and western Pacific Oceans. She comes in Egypt, Eritrea, Somalia, Djibouti, Kenya, Tanzania, Mozambique, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Madagascar, Seychelles, India , Sri Lanka , Myanmar , Thailand , Malaysia , Indonesia , Papua New Guinea , Vietnam , the Philippines , China (Hainan), Taiwan and Japan (Ryukyu Islands), Australia and other islands in the Pacific.

Systematics

Thalassia hemprichii was first described in 1832 by Ehrenberg ex Solms as Schizotheca hemprichii . In 1871 the species was placed in the genus Thalassia by Ascherson .
