The temple of Thittai

The Kaveri Delta, to which the Taluk Thanjavur belongs, is a region rich in culture and history. Thanjavur City was the capital of the Chola Empire from the 9th to the 13th centuries . The local Brihadisvara temple was built between 1003 and 1010 under King Rajaraja I as a monumental symbol of the Chola rule. It is considered the highlight of medieval Hindu temple architecture and, together with the Airavatesvara Temple in Darasuram and the Brihadisvara Temple in Gangaikonda Cholapuram, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site (see Great Temples of the Chola Dynasty ). The Shiva temples of Thiruvedhikudi and Thittai , which belong to the 274 holy places of Tamil Shaivism ( Padal Petra Sthalams ), are of religious importance . On the outskirts of Thanjavur City is Thanjai Mamani Koil , a group of three Vishnu temples that are collectively counted as one of the 108 shrines of Tamil Vishnuism ( Divya Desams ) .
