Thankmar von Münchhausen

Thankmar Freiherr von Münchhausen (born January 12, 1932 in Breslau ) is a German journalist, author and historian.

Life

Thankmar von Münchhausen grew up in Niederschwedeldorf in Silesia. Since 1815 the von Münchhausen family had owned the Niederschwedeldorfer Stiftsgut, which once belonged to the Jesuits and which his father managed. In 1946 the family was expelled from Niederschwedeldorf and returned to their headquarters in Stolzenau on the Weser.

Münchhausen passed the Abitur in 1954 in Petershagen near Minden. In 1955 he began to study political science, sociology and history. Von Münchhausen studied in Heidelberg, Paris, Bonn and Cologne. He received his doctorate in 1962 at the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Heidelberg with a dissertation on "Goals and resistances of the French policy on Algeria from 1945 to 1958".

In the same year he joined the editorial team of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung . From 1976 to 1998 he reported from Paris as their political correspondent . During this time he published several books on the history of France and the city of Paris. After finishing his full-time job for the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Münchhausen stayed in Paris, where he still lives today.
