Shown is the story of a whale that fails to win the fight against harpoons on an expedition in the Antarctic . What happens at sea is seen and told through the eyes of a young person. After the animal has been killed, the handover of the catch from the ship of those who killed it so cruelly to the factory ship , where the whale is dismantled and processed, is shown.

The film, produced by Vitaphone for Warner Bros. , was first released in the United States on April 8, 1953. In Denmark it was shown for the first time on September 7, 1959 under the title Hval i sigte .
