The Bard's Tale IV: Deep Barrows is a dungeon crawler - video game , which of inXile Entertainment was developed.

Development and publication

The Bard's Tale is a fantasy role-playing game series launchedby Interplay Productions in 1985. Two sequels were released in the 1980s; after the last title appeared in 1991, the series was suspended. In 2004, inXile Entertainment developed and published a spin-off game for the series.

In January 2015, Brian Fargo announced plans to develop The Bard's Tale IV . Fargo's vision was to create a worthy sequel to the original trilogy of Bard's Tale games. In May 2015, the studio announced it was launching a campaign on Kickstarter.com to help fund development costs for The Bard's Tale IV . The crowdfunding campaign started on June 2, 2015 with a goal of $ 1.25 million. The crowdfunding campaign exceeded the target on June 15, 2015.

The game was developed with the Unreal Engine 4 . The development team used photogrammetry to create textures for 3D objects.

Scottish folk singer Julie Fowlis adds music to the game.

The Bard's Tale IV was released for Windows on September 18, 2018 . A Director's Cut version for the game was released on August 27, 2019 for Windows, macOS, Linux, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Existing owners of the original version can upgrade the game to the Director's Cut version free of charge.

The game was nominated for "Best Original Song" with Across the Seven Realms and for "Best Sound Design for an Indie Game" at the 2019 GANG Awards, and was nominated for "Best Audio Design" at The Independent Game Developers' Association Awards.
