The Battle of Gettysburg is an American documentary short film directed by Herman Hoffman in 1955.

action

The narrator describes the course of the three-day battle of Gettysburg . The narrative is illustrated with images of the battlefield filmed in what is now Gettysburg National Military Park , showing only the statues and the grounds themselves as they existed in 1955. There are no actors in the film. The description of the main attack by Pickett's charge also shows details from Paul Philippoteaux 's painting Gettysburg Cyclorama . The film ends with footage of the Gettysburg War Cemetery, Abraham Lincoln's Gettysburg Address , which is read out in full, and the song John Brown's Body .

The Battle of Gettysburg was shot with support from the United States Department of the Interior , according to the opening credits . The film was created in cinemascope and color.
