The action film Belly of the Beast (subtitle: In the middle of an evil power , alternative title: Steven Seagal - The Belly of the Beast ) was made in 2003 under the direction of Ching Siu-Tung .

CIA agent Jake Hopper is deployed in Thailand. His colleague Sunti unintentionally kills a woman during an operation and is seriously injured himself. He becomes a Buddhist monk out of remorse and feelings of guilt . Jake resigns after the death of his wife and returns to the USA.

Jake runs a security company and focuses on raising his daughter Jessica. Years later, Jessica and her friend Sarah Winthorpe, daughter of a US senator, spend their holidays in Thailand. The girls are kidnapped there by Islamist fundamentalists under Abu Karaf. Abu Karaf calls for the release of 20 prisoners from US prisons. The authorities refuse to comply with the request.

Tom Collins, a former colleague of Hopper, notifies the kidnapper's father. Jake goes to Bangkok , where he turns to CIA agent Leon Washington. Washington matches Hopper with a General Jantapan employee.

Jake meets with Abu Karaf, from whom he learns that General Jantapan was behind the kidnapping. The general is killed, the girls are freed.

Reviews

Scott Weinberg wrote on filmcritic.com that "Steven Seagal doesn't care about the quality of his films." The film is as "amateurish and thoughtless as an action film could be."

The budget on location in Thailand turned action film was about 18 million US dollars . The film was filmed from March 17, 2003. The film was first released on December 30, 2003 on DVD in the USA.
