The Cemetery Club ( Hebrew מועדון בית הקברות, Moadon beit hakvarot ) is a 2006 documentary by Israeli director Tali Shemesh.

action

Every Saturday a group of elderly people meets at the Mount Herzl National Cemetery in Jerusalem . It is the Holocaust generation that is now trying to escape the loneliness and melancholy of old age. They read poems to each other, tell stories or debate literature and politics. They call themselves the "Mount Herzl Academy".

Minya Rubin, the director's grandmother, and her sister-in-law Lena Bar act as the film's main characters and are available as interviewees between the weekly meetings. It's about love, relationships, men, and the past. Minya and Lena are two very personable but completely different women who are very close to each other.

Gradually, a member of the "Mount Herzl Academy" fell ill and died, but despite setbacks, it continued to meet and honored its members.

The film portrays in a deeply sad and at the same time amusing way the fate of a generation that had to experience a lot.

Reviews

After the film was shown very successfully at many international film festivals, it was also shown in German cinemas in 2007 in Ventura film distribution.

Die Zeit then described him as "... beautiful and bitter and funny and oppressive and thoughtful and soulful and, all in all, simply heartwarming."

The well-known Variety magazine also praised the film: "Outrageously funny and painfully human ... THE CEMETERY CLUB enchants the audience."
