The Concert is a British short film directed by Claude Chagrin in 1974.

action

A pianist can be driven to the Royal Albert Hall and prepared for the performance by his servant. He steps out of the preparation room, which turns out to be a telephone booth , and begins to play the piano on the zebra crossing by the concert hall by jumping back and forth. Occasionally he is interrupted by cars in his game. A police officer approaches suspiciously, but after a short time is enthusiastic about the man's game. With a policewoman he starts to stop traffic. Soon four more musicians take part in the piano playing. When the pianist realizes that the piano needs to be tuned, that too can be handled. This is followed by improvisations in which the pianist crawls along the zebra crossing, lying on his stomach, among other things. After a quick sequence of games, the musician's shoes start to burn and have to be extinguished. At the end all the cars applaud with their horns. The pianist lets himself be driven away. The policeman stays behind and tries to hop on the zebra crossing, which remains soundless.

production

The Concert was filmed on location behind the Royal Albert Hall. It was the first of three films - The Christmas Tree (1975) and The Morning Spider (1976) - that Julian Chagrin made in the mid-1970s with his then-wife Claude. Chagrin had learned to play pantomime in Paris ; the film has no dialogue. The Concert was performed at the 1974 Berlinale in June 1974 .

Awards

The Concert won the Golden Bear for Best Short Film at the 1974 Berlinale . The film was also nominated in 1975 for an Oscar in the category of best short film.
