As The Drive is a series of attacks ( "Drive") of the last quarter of the AFC Championship Games , one of the two semi-finals of the National Football League of the season in 1986 , between the Denver Broncos and Cleveland Browns called. Denver's offense to quarterback John Elway achieved in 5 minutes and 2 seconds 98  yards of space in 15 plays and equalized the game. Denver won in extra time after a field goal with 23:20 and moved into Super Bowl XXI .

This drive is considered prototypical for a Hall of Fame candidate and has achieved cult status.

initial situation

After the Browns prevailed against the New York Jets and the Broncos against the New England Patriots , both teams were in the AFC Championship Game. The game took place on January 11, 1987 at Cleveland Stadium .

In the first quarter, the Browns took the 7-0 lead after quarterback Bernie Kosar threw a touchdown on Herman Fontenot and Mark Moseley scored the point after touchdown (PAT). In the second quarter, the Broncos first achieved a field goal by Rich Karlis and then a touchdown followed by PAT, which gave them the lead for the first time. Shortly before the end of the first half, the Browns equalized at 10:10 with a field goal. The Broncos took the lead again in the third quarter when they scored another field goal 2 minutes and 50 seconds before the end of the third quarter. Shortly after the last quarter began, the Browns equalized with a field goal from the 24-yard line. After a failed drive by the Broncos, they punted . The punt was up to Denver's 48-yard line carried back . From there Kosar threw a touchdown pass to Brian Brennan . After Karlis completed the PAT, the Browns were leading 20:13 with 5:43 remaining. After the kickoff , the Broncos kick returner was unable to control the ball and the ball bounced to the Broncos 2-yard line where the players secured it. There were 5 minutes and 32 seconds until the end of regular time.

consequences

The Cleveland Browns failed to score in the remaining 37 seconds, which is why the game went into overtime. There the Denver Broncos scored a field goal, which they won the game and denied the Browns their first Super Bowl participation. The Broncos lost Super Bowl XXI at 20:39 against the New York Giants .

The drive in popular culture

In the film Hot Tub - The whirlpool ... is a damn time machine , this move explains the butterfly effect. Mark Jackson does not catch the ball because it is distracted by a squirrel.
