The Dukes of Stratosphear was a pseudonym of the British new wave formation XTC used from 1985 to 1987 and known not only to insiders .

history

With their albums 25 O'Clock from 1985 and Psonic Psunspot from 1987, The Dukes of Stratosphear took up the music of psychedelic rock of the sixties in a parodic way and thus contributed to the revival of the music of bands like The Beatles and The 13th Floor Elevators , Pink Floyd , The Electric Prunes, and The Pretty Things . Both albums were released on CD in 1987 under the title Chips from the Chocolate Fireball .

This creative phase was a rather "XTC-untypical" tribute to the 1960s. In contrast to the often socially critical and in the UK hard to sell texts from the pen of Andy Partridge under the name XTC, the publications of the Dukes Of Stratosphear were surprisingly well received by the public in England.

The Dukes of Stratosphear experienced in 2003 a brief resurrection, the song - Open a Can (Of Human Beans) - for the compilation The Wish List of multiple sclerosis record company. The piece was later published by Andy Partridge on Fuzzy Warbles Volume 7 (2006).

Worth mentioning

  • It appears that the single Hilly Fields (1982) by Nick Nicely (a British psychedelic rock artist) had an influence on The Dukes of Stratosphear .
  • Under the further pseudonym Terry and the Lovemen , they recorded the previously unreleased song The Good Things as an alleged cover version of the tribute album A Testimonial Dinner and thanked their alter ego for "borrowing the instruments" "with a wink" - British humor par excellence.
