The Eleanor Roosevelt Story is an American documentary film released in 1965 .

Photographs and newsreel reports served as the basis for the biography of the former First Lady of the United States, Eleanor Roosevelt (1884–1962).

As a child, Eleanor was shy and domestic. She did not get along well with the customs of the people at the turn of the century. In 1905 she married her fifth uncle, Franklin D. Roosevelt , which changed her life forever. She founded not only a family but nursed her to poliomyelitis diseased man. She encouraged her physically challenged husband to get into politics.

Eleanor was always at the side of her husband, who first became governor of New York and later president of the United States . After his death on April 12, 1945, Eleanor remained active in politics. As a human rights advocate and an opponent of Senator Joseph McCarthy , she traveled around the world. She was sent to the United Nations as a US delegate by President Truman . As a gifted diplomat, she chaired the UN Commission on Human Rights , which drafted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights .

In 1966 , the film won an Oscar for Best Documentary . It was also recognized by the National Board of Review with the NBR Award for Best Film .
