The Gonads was an initially fictional British Oi! -Band, first described by Garry Bushell in 1979 . The project by Bushell and various musicians from The Business then awoke on the third Oi! -Sampler Carry on Oi !! to live. In addition to a few other projects and a live album, the group fell asleep. Since 1990 there has been a new line-up that regularly releases albums and tours.

Band history

Garry Bushell worked for the music magazine Sounds in the late 1970s . In the course of reporting on the creation of the Oi! in Great Britain in 1980 Bushell published a lengthy article on the fictional band The Gonads. This was preceded by a relatively insignificant school band that was founded in the late 1970s and, in addition to a few of their own, played mainly cover versions .

1981, as part of the release of the third Oi! Sampler Carry on Oi !! Bushell recorded Tuckers Ruckers Ain't no Suckers with The Business members Steve Kent (guitar), Martin Smith (bass) and Nick Cunningham (drums) . The demo Uptown was created in the same line-up . The demo was to be re-released in 1988 on a split LP with The Blood . A year later, Oi! Oi! That's Yer Lot! with Getting Pissed the next piece in the group. In the same year the group also released the two singles Pure Punk for Row People and Peace Artists . Business newcomer John Fisher played on the first single, who joined Combat 84 shortly afterwards , and Mark Brennan (bass). In addition, Annie Auldiron Gayfather, a singer who shared the vocals with Garry Bushell, got on board. The second single featured Steve Whale (guitar), Mark Brennan (bass) and Kevin Boyce (drums). The single was produced by Micky Geggus ( Cockney Rejects ) and Frankie Flame took over the piano . 1983 appeared next to the contributions for the Son of Oi! -Sampler the single Deliah . Contributions to The Oi! of Sex samplers, sometimes under the name Prole and Orgasm Guerillas. In addition to Bushell, Mark Brabbs (drums, ex- Tank ), Steve Kent (bass) and JJ Bedsore (guitar, ex-The Blood) were involved in the group. In addition, the live album Live - The Official Bootleg was released, the cover of which showed a fake 1977 concert ticket from Madison Square Gardens . A fictional band biography was on the back cover. After Garry Bushell started at the tabloid The Sun , the project fell apart.

After Garry Bushell jammed a bit with his old friends Clyde Ward and Colin Blood in 1990, there was a kind of reunion with bassist Casano Kev (bass). In 1997 the comeback single Oi! Nutter . In 1998 Rockin 'Dave and Romulan (drums) joined the band. Together they toured the United States and released the albums Back & Barking , Schitz-oi-phrenia and Old Boots, No Panties . After a few personnel changes, a new line-up formed with Tony Feedback (guitar, ex- Angelic Upstarts ), Scoops (bass, superyob ) and various drummers. In 2009 the group made their first guest appearance in Germany at the Punk & Disorderly Festival in Berlin.

Music genre

The Gonads are not a serious Oi! Band, but rather a fun band that doesn't shy away from unusual ideas. The fake band history and the performances are reminiscent of Monty Python and Spinal Tap . There are many allusions to other bands like The 4-Skins ("We taught the 4-Skins all they know" - Tuckers Ruckers Ain't no Suckers ) and The Last Resort ("No Best, no trust, just pure impact - the last resort “- Go Mad with the Gonads ). The Gonads also took over some business songs and played them with falsified lyrics. Overall, Gonads is relatively far to the left, as Bushell comes from a socialist background and was never at a loss for harsh words against the National Front , which threatened him in the 1980s. However, more recent actions by Bushell cast doubt on this self-image. For example, Bushell stood for the English Democrats , who are perceived by the British public as nationalistic .
