The Hu is a Mongolian rock band from Ulaanbaatar .

Band and members

The syllable Hu in the band name is the Mongolian root for the word human. The band name, which is also a homonym for The Who , means something like "the people".

The band's logo shows a snow leopard . The band chose this animal for their logo because of its mythical significance. Among other things, it is said to be a symbolic animal for ancient Mongolian tribes.

The four members of the band, Gala, Jaya, Enkush and Temka, all have degrees in music from the Mongolian State Conservatory . Jaya teaches there under his real name G. Nyamjantsan.

history

The band was founded in 2016 in Ulaanbaatar. In the fall of 2018, The Hu released two videos on the Internet ( Wolf Totem in September and Yuve Yuve Yu in November), which quickly gained greater attention. At the beginning of January 2019 they had a total of eight million views, at the beginning of July 2019 there were already 33 million. Her first album called The Gereg was released on September 13, 2019.

The album contains nine songs, including the songs Yuve Yuve Yu and Wolf Totem , which have already been released as videos . The word Gereg describes a metal pendant that was used by the Mongol Empire as the first passport during the time of Genghis Khan and enabled diplomats to move freely with many nations. The debut album The Gereg was released worldwide on September 13, 2019 via Eleven Seven Music . In addition to the songs mentioned, the titles Shoog Shoog , The Legend of Mother Swan , The Great Chinggis Khaan , The Same , Song of Women , Shireg Shireg and The Gereg can be found on it .

Music genre

The Hu call their style of music Hunnu Rock . They use traditional Mongolian musical instruments such as the horse head violin , the Mongolian guitar and also employ traditional Mongolian undertone singing . From the field of heavy metal they mainly borrow the hammering basses for their music.

The band stands in a tradition of Mongolian bands, which began in the 1980s during the democratization of the country to mix Western music styles with Mongolian music traditions, while transporting political content.

The Hu contributed the main theme to the computer game Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order .
