action

During Prohibition , gang boss Joe Krozac marries Talya, who is unaware of his criminal activities. On his return to the United States, he orders the killing of the Kile brothers who invaded his area in his absence. Three brothers die, but Acey Kile manages to escape.

To Krozac's delight, Talya becomes pregnant, but is shortly thereafter sentenced to ten years in prison for tax evasion. After Talya's visit to Krozac in Alcatraz , journalist Paul North places a gun in the baby's hands for a photo. Talia goes to the newspaper's editor to complain about the coverage but is unsuccessful. Even so, North, ashamed, gives up his job and begins a relationship with her. She divorced, marries North, changes her name, and moves away with him to start a new life.

After his release from prison, Krozac wants to take revenge on his wife and kidnap his son. But his old right hand Curly persuades him to take care of his old gang first. This turns out to be a trap. Curly and the gang torture Krozac to find out where he has hidden his money. When they got stuck with torture, they kidnap his son and Krozac gives in. The gang flees with the prey, but is shot by the police.

Krozac tries unsuccessfully to convince his son that he is actually his father. On the way he and his son get closer and Krozac decides to leave his son with his mother.

He then meets Acey Kile, who holds him in check with a pistol and announces that he will first shoot him and then give the boy's identity to the press. Krozac pounces on Acey and manages to take Acey with him to death.

criticism

"Robinson's dynamic performance, and slick MGM production, elevate this tale of an underworld chief who's sent away for ten years, obsessed by the thought of the son he's never met. Entertaining story by William Wellman and Robert Carson was originally to have been called Another Public Enemy. "
