John Lee Mahin

John Lee Mahin (born August 23, 1902 in Evanston , Illinois , † April 18, 1984 in Santa Monica , California ) was an American screenwriter .

Life

John Lee Mahin worked as a reporter after studying at Harvard. The screenwriter Ben Hecht established contacts to the film industry and their first collaboration with the film Scarface was a great success. In the following years, Mahin was hired as a script doctor , even without being named in the credits , to revise the scripts of other authors, for example for Gone with the Wind . During the McCarthy era , Mahin took an active part in eliminating alleged communist influences in the film industry.

In 1938 and 1958 he was nominated for an Oscar in the category Best Adapted Screenplay . In 1968 he received the Laurel Award for Screen Writing Achievement from the Writers Guild of America .

From 1937 to 1946 he was married to the silent film star Patsy Ruth Miller .
