Ragnar takes Uhtred into the family and raises him as a Dane after he saved his daughter Thyra from the son of his shipbuilder Kjartan. A few years later, Uhtred ( Alexander Dreymon ) and Brida ( Emily Cox ) are already grown up, Kjartan, who is looking for revenge, attacks Ragnar's court. Thyra is kidnapped and only Brida and Uhtred can escape the killing. Uhtred then swears revenge on Kjartan and also wants to win back his father's land from his uncle.

Uhtred tries to find the two leaders of the Danish army Ubba ( Rune Temte ) and Guthrum ( Thomas W. Gabrielsson ) and to convince them of his cause. His endeavors are made more difficult by Kjartan's rumors that accuse him of the murder of Ragnar and his family. His request is rejected by the Danes and so he and Brida have to flee to the last free Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Wessex. Here they meet the king Aethelred, whom they are now trying to win as an ally. Only through the intercession of Father Beocca ( Ian Hart ), who already served his father, can Uhtred get Aethelred's hearing. Although Uhtred provides him with information about the Danish army, which could lead to the victory of the troops from Wessex, he and Brida are imprisoned out of distrust.

Using Uhtred's information, the battle can be won by King Aethelred and his brother Alfred ( David Dawson ). However, the king is mortally wounded in battle and passes the crown on to his brother before he dies. Here he bypasses his own son Aethelwold ( Harry McEntire ), who from then on seeks revenge on Alfred. Although Alfred distrusts Uhtred, he listens to his advice, which is helpful in the peace negotiations, and gives him the task of training the army from Wessex. Meanwhile, Brida becomes more and more unhappy because she distrusts the Saxons and she also loses Uhtred's child to a miscarriage. The Danes are accompanied by Jarl Ragnar's son, Ragnar the Younger ( Tobias Santelmann ), who wants to clarify the death of his father. When he and Uhtred meet, he believes in his innocence and promises him his support. When Ragnar returns to the Danes, Brida accompanies him because she no longer wants to stay with the Saxons.

In order to strengthen his claim to his father's seat, Uhtred needs a larger income and land of his own. Alfred takes advantage of the situation and urges him to marry Mildrith ( Amy Wren ), a relative of Lord Odda the Elder ( Simon Kunz ). After the wedding, however, she revealed that he had been betrayed. She inherited large debts from her father to the church, which have now passed to Uhtred after the wedding. Despite this burden, affection grows between them and she eventually becomes pregnant by him. Meanwhile, the Danes conquer the city of Wareham. Alfred creates a force to retake the city. It quickly becomes clear that both armed forces are at a stalemate and a temporary peace is agreed. Hostages are exchanged each time, including Uhtred. Alfred fears that the Danes are just waiting for Ubba, who is on a raid in Ireland, to return to break the peace. Uhtred is said to be spying on the Danes and warning Wessex of a new invasion
