The Last Sign is a Canadian-British-French thriller by Douglas Law from the year 2005 .

action

Kathy Macfarlane tries to get back to life after the accidental death of her husband Jeremy. Kathy now lives with her three children, two school-age girls (Fiona and Maggie) and the young Frank, alone in a large country house. The widow suffers financial difficulties and the bank threatens to terminate the mortgage loan . Kathy therefore takes a job in a chemistry laboratory , and she also rents the property's garden shed to the French engineer Marc Larrieu, who is working on a construction project in the region.

Kathy's husband, a doctor by trade, had turned increasingly to alcohol and became violent as a result, which prompted Kathy to leave her husband with the children shortly before the car accident. Nevertheless, it is now difficult for Kathy to let go of her late husband's thoughts. (Kathy's memories of the marriage are faded in at regular intervals during the film's plot.)

But not only the memories of her husband, which allow Kathy to hardly distinguish between dream and reality, but also certain events in the house affect Kathy's psyche. Objects (keys, finger rings) disappear and reappear unexpectedly, technical devices (washing machine, shower) start to run by themselves. In addition, Kathy now gets an anonymous phone call every night at 12:15 a.m. (the time of her husband's death).

Kathy receives moral support from her HR manager Endora, who also invites her to a private party. In conversation with Endora, there is a matchbox that Kathy supposedly lost. Even though Kathy is a non-smoker, she accepts the matches, as they have the address of the hotel in which they were married at the time. Kathy goes to the Hotel Moon River and meets Fergus O'Brien, a young man who Jeremy once saved as a doctor after a house fire and who now works at the hotel. Later, Kathy receives an offer from Endora to use telepathy to contact her deceased husband. Kathy can't do anything with it for the time being and rejects the offer.

The engineer Marc quickly makes friends with Kathy's children, especially Frank, which noticeably improves the tense relationship between mother and son. Marc and Kathy also get closer. Marc also helps Kathy discover the origin of the anonymous phone calls. When Marc is about to be transferred, the children are disappointed. However, he lets Kathy know that he is ready to settle down for a good reason . However, Kathy is unable to start a new relationship.

Since the calls originated from the Hotel Moon River, according to the connection record, Kathy suspects the youngster Fergus O'Brien to be responsible. Kathy speaks to the young hotel employee, who admits that the calls were made by a friend . When Kathy tries to talk to the boy's mother shortly afterwards, she learns that Fergus has been dead for six months .

Kathy now seeks out Endora for a spiritual session. Although she breaks it off, she slowly but surely realizes that the puzzling events are signs of Jeremy's spirit, which wants to ask her for forgiveness.

Marc has meanwhile gone from the property to the airport, but leaves the counter shortly before check-in. Kathy is also going through an inner change and also drives to the airport to prevent Marc from leaving. When Kathy narrowly escapes a collision with a trucker, she takes the opportunity to forgive the ghost of her late husband. Kathy and Marc meet at the entrance to the airport, where they hug and kiss.
