The Legendary Pink Dots (LPD) are an Anglo-Dutch experimental rock formation that was founded in London in August 1980 and moved to Amsterdam in 1984. The core of the band is made up of singer and mastermind Edward Ka-Spel (who always wore cracked lines on his face on stage) and keyboardist Phil Knight (better known as "The Silverman"). Otherwise, the band had around three dozen colleagues over the years and decades. Among these are the violinist Patrick Q. Wright (1984–1989) and the bassist / drummer Ryan Moore (1992–2000).

The band name comes from a piano used in the early years, on the white keys of which dots were painted with pink nail polish to mark finger positions.

The Legendary Pink Dots had live performances at the Wave-Gotik-Treffen in 1994, 2002, 2006, 2011 and 2016 and the M'era Luna Festival in 2008.

style

In terms of music, the Legendary Pink Dots range between all the varieties of psychedelic rock of the 1960s and wave music of the 1980s, but on the other hand they defy any classification. Bizarre, avant-garde sound collages dominate , but they can also take on the shape of catchy catchy tunes. Comparisons have been made with Syd Barrett and Pink Floyd (especially with regard to the lyrics), but also Brian Eno and the Krautrock around Can , Neu! and Kraftwerk are mentioned from time to time. The style of LPD has differentiated and varied over the decades, but has remained unmistakable.

Ka-Spel's singing is characteristic: it always seems overdone, overdrawn and overstretched, and is sometimes used as an instrument. The texts are partly preaching, partly screaming and have their own mythology, mostly dark or marked by dark humor. In terms of content, they revolve around apocalyptic or fantastic events, or grotesque incidents in an apparent reality. Here, suggestive images are primarily played with.

A popular legend has it that the LPD actually got an offer from a bigger pop label, but it was undetected in the fan mail for over a year.

Although the band never really found themselves in the mainstream catchment area, they now have a worldwide fan base and can boast an output of well over 40 albums (although some early works were released on cassette). There are also several side projects, some excursions on solo paths, some collaborations (" Mimir " or "Tear Garden" with cEvin Key from Skinny Puppy , as well as guest contributions to Nurse With Wound and Andrew Liles ).

Nevertheless, the band asks on their website: "Support Your Band" - although this is essentially about sending private recordings of previous concerts.
