The Living and the Dead is a British horror - drama series by Ashley Pharoah with Colin Morgan and Charlotte Spencer . The six-part season was broadcast on BBC One from June 28 to August 2, 2016 and published on Prime Video in Germany on April 7, 2017 .

action

When Nathan Appleby inherited the family farm after his mother's death in 1894, he and his wife Charlotte moved from London to the countryside in Shepzoy, Somerset , to rebuild the farm. The couple are science and progress-oriented: Nathan is a psychologist, Charlotte a photographer. When she tries to modernize the farm, Charlotte encounters the dislike and skepticism of progress on the part of the workers, while Nathan has to deal with the religion and superstitions of the rural people when treating what he sees as mentally ill people who are allegedly possessed or see ghosts, but looks for rational explanations himself. But soon he too begins to see apparitions of a woman with an iPad ("Book of Light") and believes he is hearing his deceased son Gabriel. As he tries to communicate with the spirits and his son, his behavior becomes more and more disturbing.

The last episode shows Lara, a descendant of Nathan, who has apparitions from Gabriel, which is why she is in a psychiatric institution. She drives to Shepzoy to establish a connection with Nathan and - what with Charlotte's help apparently succeeds - to prevent him from killing himself. She had an accident with her car, which was found by the Applebys in the past. Thirty years later, in a seance, Nathan's ghost is called to ask why he killed his wife.

Production and publication

Screenwriter Ashley Pharoah was hired by BBC Cymru Wales to create a television series about Victorian ghosts. His writing partner Matthew Graham of the series Life on Mars and Ashes to Ashes was originally supposed to be there, but dropped out for Childhood's End . After Alice Troughton joined as director, she suggested Colin Morgan to play the main character. Pharoah came across actress Charlotte Spencer through the series Glue . The soundtrack for the series comes from the band The Insects .

BBC announced the series and the two main actors in early August 2015. On June 17, 2016, the series was released as a box set on BBC iPlayer and aired on BBC One from June 28 to August 2, 2016 . On August 12, the BBC announced that it would not be renewed. The season was released in German on April 7, 2017 on Prime Video .

reception

Kayla Cobb for Decider sees in The Living and the Dead the two directions that Victorian period drama can take united: hot stories with sexy and forbidden affairs or the creepy setting for horror films. She also describes the series as a copy of Downton Abbey with the Mysteries of Lorraine and Ed Warren .

Danette Chavez for AV Club sees an overload of topics and genres. It is obvious that the makers have had difficulty settling on a genre, and it seems as if they have become too greedy or confused with their goals. But she praises the two main characters and their actors. Nathan changes from the archetypal, elegant Victorian gentleman to the tormented Byronian hero and Charlotte can be a spiritual descendant of Jane Eyre .
