The Musical Box

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Musical Box is a Canadian tribute band that faithfully reconstructs the concerts of the band Genesis between 1972 and 1976 and performs them live. It is the only band in the world that has ever received an official license from Genesis and Peter Gabriel .

history

Since their start in 1993 they have continued to perfect the concerts for Foxtrot (1972), Selling England by the Pound (1973) and The Lamb lies down on Broadway (1974). This includes the procurement of the same equipment and the same instruments that Genesis used in the 1970s (Mike Rutherford is said to have lent them his sitar for "I Know What I Like"), the exact replicas of custom-made items for the stage design, including the costumes Peter Gabriels, to copies of the original slides that were seen during the Genesis concerts. Has also Tony Banks together by part with them the multi-track recording, so that they could reproduce individual parts better.

While Tony Banks has only seen one film recording of a concert so far, the remaining four members of Genesis from 1972 to 1975 personally attended concerts by The Musical Box (TMB). So were Mike Rutherford and Peter Gabriel present at concerts in 2002 in England. Steve Hackett (2002 Royal Albert Hall ) (January 29, 2012 in Zurich) and Phil Collins (February 24, 2005 in Geneva ) were each on stage for one piece and played their guitar and drums part.

The Musical Box has been touring Europe regularly since 2002, taking them to Great Britain, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Spain, Portugal, Switzerland, Italy and Scandinavia. In 2005 and 2006 the “The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway Tour” and from 2002 to 2004 and 2007 the “Foxtrot / Selling England By The Pound Tour” were performed. At the end of 2007, TMB presented the “Black Show” carried out by Genesis 1974 only in North America, which showed the “Selling England By The Pound Show” with a different stage set-up and different costumes mainly in black. The high and rare status TMB has as a cover band is demonstrated by the venues in well-known concert halls such as the Royal Albert Hall in London or the Jahrhunderthalle in Frankfurt am Main , which like most other halls were well filled with thousands of visitors and often sold out. In Germany, along with the Frankfurt Jahrhunderthalle, the Theater am Marientor in Duisburg is one of TMB's most popular venues.

In the fall of 2008, the performance of the A Trick of the Tail tour from 1976 took place, where Phil Collins first appeared as lead singer. After Denis Gagné (alias Peter Gabriel) left, the role of Phil Collins was initially taken over by Ron Belgard. However, he surprisingly left the band in September 2008 and Denis Gagné returned as a singer for a short time. Since Gagné doesn't play drums, Marc Laflamme was also hired as a drummer.

At the beginning of 2012 The Musical Box went on tour in Europe. The "Lamb lies down on Broadway" tour began on January 26th in Rome and ended on March 10th in Lisbon and on March 13th in London.

In 2018 the band changed their previous concept for the first time. No Genesis tour from the 1970s was presented true to the original, instead the group presented with the "Extravaganza" tour, a kind of retrospective of Genesis' work from the years of the progressive phase from 1970 to 1977. which at the time were not or only rarely performed by Genesis. With two new musicians (see below band members) The Musical Box will present the Extravaganza tour until 2019 on an extensive tour of Europe and North America.
