action

A farm in the Canadian no man's land: shortly before the start of a heavy snowstorm, Ann's husband, John, sets out to visit his father, who lives 16 miles away, and to help him with his household before the storm, as the old man can hardly look after himself. Ann is concerned and John promises to stop by Steven on his way to see his father and send him to Ann. John leaves and Ann passes the time thinking about Steven and how the fun-loving man danced with her when John wouldn't want to. She starts painting the doors of the apartment, which she has been planning to do for a long time.

Steven appears in the middle of the storm, they both drink gin. Steven tries to wake Ann's memories of the dance together, but Ann pretends not to be able to remember anything. Later both cards play, but stop when Ann becomes less and less concentrated. She thinks John will be back soon, but Steven doubts it because the storm is very strong. A little later both sleep together and spend the night in bed together. In the morning the bedroom door is open. John is found dead by farmers shortly afterwards. He inexplicably got lost in the storm. As Ann goes to her husband's body, she discovers the color on his hands that she used to paint the doors. She is left in shock.
