The Race

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Race was a high seas regatta , which in 2000/2001 led non-stop around the world on multihull G-Class sailing yachts - ie boats of unlimited size ("no limit") - without external support. The port of departure was Barcelona in Spain, the port of destination was Marseille in France .

An attempt to hold the regatta again in 2004 failed at an early stage of the organization. Currently (as of 2004) another attempt is planned for 2013/2014.

Regatta 2000/2001

The regatta, which started on December 31, 2000, was initiated by the record sailor and multiple Jules Verne Trophy winner Bruno Peyron . The route led from the western Mediterranean across the Atlantic to the south and east around the Cape of Good Hope , Leeuwin and Hoorn , before heading back across the Atlantic to the Mediterranean. The yachts used were not subject to any structural restrictions, which is why large multihull boats - generally the fastest, but also the most expensive boat types - participated.

According to the organizers, the regatta attracted a million visitors in the port of origin and destination.

Planning of editions in 2004 and 2013/2014

A new edition of the race was planned by Peyron with the start for February 29, 2004, a good three years after the first edition, and the starting and destination port of Marseille, but had to be canceled due to a lack of sponsors. The English regatta sailor Tracy Edwards , who had taken part in the preliminary discussions for the regatta, organized the maxi regatta Oryx Quest for 2005 shortly afterwards . This led to violent allegations from Peyron, who saw this form of digging up sponsors and participants as "piracy".

In February 2010, Peyron announced that he was planning a new edition of the regatta for 2013/2014. Since the regatta starts in winter, the port of departure in particular should be in southern Europe for climatic reasons in order to be able to attract a larger audience. However, Peyron believes a "prologue" to the regatta in northern European ports is conceivable.
