Guy Pearce plays Eric, a lonely antihero whose car is stolen one day by a gang of criminals (Henry, Caleb and Archie). Eric follows the criminals across the Australian outback to get his car back. He meets the injured Rey. It turns out that Rey is the brother of the leader of the car thieves. To get the stolen car back, Eric and Rey set out together to track down the gang of criminals. Rey leads Eric to his brother's residence. Eric wants to render the sleeping car thieves harmless but not kill them. The situation escalates when Rey and Henry threaten each other with a gun. Henry shoots his brother, whereupon Eric kills Archie, then Caleb and finally Henry. He burns the corpses and drives his car into the desert, where he takes a dead dog out of the trunk and buries it.
