The Sleeping Cardinal is a British mystery film directed by Leslie S. Hiscott . It is independent of the Basil Rathbone series of Holmes films, which also began in the 1930s. In the US, the film was called Sherlock Holmes' Fatal Hour .

Ronnie Adair, a Foreign Office diplomat , has become addicted to gambling. Moriarty, who knew this, blackmailed him and forced him to put counterfeit money in his diplomatic bag from Paris to London. Adair's worried sister asks Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson to investigate the reasons for her brother's gambling excesses and depressive moods. After Adair appears to have committed suicide, Holmes investigates leads that Moriarty murdered Adair.
