The Zen Circus is an Italian rock band from Pisa .
history
The group goes back to the duo The Zen , consisting of Andrea Appino and Teschio (Marcello Bruzzi), which formed in Pisa in 1994 and released the album About Thieves, Farmers, Tramps and Policemen in 1998. After bassist Ufo had joined them and had their first live experiences together, Zen Circus released their first official album in 2001: Visited by the Ghost of Blind Willie Lemon Juice Namington IV . A number of appearances followed, until drummer Teschio left in 2003 and was replaced by Karim Qqru. With a new line-up, the band recorded the album Doctor Seduction in 2004 , which received a lot of approval from both critics and audiences and made them better known beyond their niche .
The band's next album, Life and Opinions of Nello Scarpellini, Gentleman , was released in 2005, and in addition to songs in English, it also contained some in Italian and French. On the following tour, the group deepened their friendship with Violent Femmes bassist Brian Ritchie, after which Zen Circus accompanied the American band's Italian concerts in 2007. Ritchie then worked with the band both as a musician and as a producer on their fourth album Villa Inferno , which also included other guest musicians, such as Kim and Kelley Deal ( Pixies , Breeders ), Jerry Harrison ( Talking Heads ) and Giorgio Canali ( CSI ).
The fifth album Andate tutti affanculo was released in 2009. With the successor Nati per subire , the band achieved a chart success for the first time, which (after an EP in 2012, Metal Arcade ) was also achieved in 2014, 2016 and 2018 with the release of the albums Canzoni contro la natura , La terza guerra mondiale or Il fuoco in una stanza . In 2016, Francesco Pellegrini joined the band as the second guitarist. At the end of 2018, the participation of Zen Circus in the Sanremo Festival 2019 was announced.
