Thelonious Monk with John Coltrane is an album by Thelonious Monk . The recordings, which were made in New York from April to July 1957, appeared in 1961 as a long-playing record on Jazzland Records and Fontana Records . When it was re-released as a compact disc , “Monk's Mood” was added as a bonus track from Monk's album Thelonious Himself . Because of its historical significance, the album was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2007.

background

The album contains (in addition to Monk's solo number) two studio encounters with saxophonist John Coltrane. On June 26, 1957 Monk had recorded the Riverside album Monk's Music in a septet line-up; Also in the studio were Ray Copeland , Gigi Gryce , Coleman Hawkins , Wilbur Ware and Art Blakey . Two of the alternate takes of “Off Minor” and “Epistrophy” are from this session. In July 1957, Coltrane and Monk, accompanied by Wilbur Ware (and Shadow Wilson, recorded the tracks "Nutty," "Ruby My Dear," and "Trinkle, Tinkle." Monk then performed with Coltrane on November 29, 1957 at a benefit concert in the Carnegie Hall ( Thelonious Monk Quartet with John Coltrane at Carnegie Hall , Blue Note). The album was supplemented by the solo number "Funcional" from April 1957; an alternate take (take 1) from his studio session for the riverside album Thelonious Himself ( 1957).

reception

Michael G. Nastos gave the album the highest rating of five stars in Allmusic and wrote: “The Jazzland sessions by Thelonious Monk and John Coltrane are widely considered to be one of the greatest collaborations between the two most influential musicians in modern jazz (notwithstanding Miles Davis ). While the mastery of the principals is undeniable, the incomparable bassist Wilbur Ware should also be recognized as a powerful anchor as anyone can wish. These dates from 1957 also offer a variety of drum-less trio, quartet, septet or solo piano settings, all of which emphasize Monk's compelling and whimsical compositions. "

According to Thomas Fitterling, the quartet numbers Coltrane and Monk showed themselves to be excellently coordinated with one another; the sound technology coped much better with the mono quartet recordings than with the stereo septet recordings. Wilbur Wares' dense bass playing is also recorded much better here, even if it is not particularly virtuoso.
