Theobald Baumann

Theobald "Theo" Baumann , nickname "Pat" (born July 11, 1923 in Erlenbach ; † February 16, 1944 at Aprilia ), was a German football goalkeeper .

Life

Theo Baumann was already active at 1. FC Kaiserslautern as a teenager . There and in the HJ (Bann 323), whose football team consisted mainly of players from the FCK, he already played with the later world champions Werner Kohlmeyer and Ottmar Walter . He later moved to the first team and at the age of 18 had a large share in winning the championship in the Gauliga Westmark 1941/42 . For the first time in the club's history, FCK reached the final round of the German Championship, in which they had to admit defeat to FC Schalke 04 in the round of 16 (3: 9). Previously, SV Waldhof Mannheim had been defeated 7-1. Baumann was in the line-up in both games.

From 1942 he was no longer available to the FCK, as he was drafted into the Wehrmacht. He was stationed as an upper rifleman near Berlin. In August 1943 he was invited to a course for young talents in Breslau by the then Reich trainer Sepp Herberger . Herberger had planned a football player command of the guard battalion Greater Germany, in which Baumann (and Fritz Walter, among others ) was planned. “Pat” Baumann was also active as a guest player at Hertha BSC . During this time he was twice goalkeeper in a Berlin selection (1: 3 defeat against Hamburg on November 7, 1943 and 4: 3 victory against the Generalgouvernement on January 2, 1944).

Baumann died on February 16, 1944 near Aprilia in the Battle of Nettuno . Before he became a soldier, he had worked as a brewer.
