Theodor Benecke

Theodor Benecke (born September 10, 1911 in Lüneburg ; † May 15, 1994 ) was department head in the Reich Ministry of Aviation and Ministerialdirigent in the Federal Ministry of Defense . He was the editor of several book series on the subject of defense and aviation technology.

Studies and early career

Benecke studied physics, mathematics and chemistry, and graduated in 1934 with a doctoral thesis on the subject of magnetic coils and homogeneous vertical magnetic fields. In 1936 he received his flight license and took a job at the German Research Institute for Aviation . From 1939 he was department head in the Reich Ministry of Aviation, where he was responsible, among other things, for “Sea drop weapons”. From 1940 he was involved in the development of German countermeasures against British mines with the help of magnetic fields.

Office Blank and Federal Ministry of Defense

In 1953, Benecke took a position in the Blank Office , the forerunner of the Federal Ministry of Defense , and rose there to the position of ministerial director. Investigations into the Starfighter affair by Fritz-Josef Rath , the head of the anti-corruption department, revealed that Benecke is said to have accepted bribes from the Grumman Aerospace Corporation in connection with the selection process as head of "Department T" . However, Benecke only pretended that the Super Tiger should be selected and refused to use his influence on Grumman.

Other activities

In 1969, Benecke was a member of the founding board of the German Research and Research Institute for Aerospace . From 1972 to 1976 he was the chairman of the German Aerospace Society . Furthermore, he was President and Executive Director of the Federal Association of the German Aerospace Industry . He was editor of the book series Die Deutsche Luftfahrt and Jahrbuch der Wehrtechnik .
