He then initially worked in industry before he began studying natural sciences at the TH Stuttgart in the winter semester of 1949/50 . From 1952 to 1953 he worked as a student assistant in the Botanical Institute, whose collection material had largely been lost during the war and had to be recompiled. Butterfaß then moved to Münster, where he began with Siegfried Strugger with a dissertation on the water balance of plants. With the work preliminary work on the topography of the uptake of drippable water by aboveground plant organs, he received his doctorate on February 20, 1956 in Münster. Parts of the dissertation appeared in the journal Protoplasma that same year .

Theodor Butterfaß worked from 1957 at the Max Planck Institute for Plant Genetics in Ladenburg , where he was primarily concerned with the genetics and cell biology of plastids . In 1959 he married Lotte Schumacher, with whom he had five children.

In 1964 Butterfaß completed his habilitation in Heidelberg . In 1970 he published the growth and development physiology of the plant. An introduction ; the book was published in 1973 in a Dutch version. From 1973 Butterfaß held a chair in Frankfurt . In particular, he did research on chloroplasts . In 1991 he retired. In retirement he took part in the compilation of a guide to the Botanical Garden of the University of Frankfurt , which was published in 2005 and had its second edition in 2008.
