Theodor Edler von Lerch
Theodor Edler von Lerch (born August 31, 1869 in Pressburg , † December 24, 1945 in Vienna ) was an Austrian major general in the Austro-Hungarian army and ski pioneer.
He spent the years 1910 to 1912 as an exchange officer in the Imperial Japanese Army , where he became the most important pioneer of military and civil skiing . Lerch himself was trained by Mathias Zdarsky .
In 1911 he made the first ski ascent of Fuji .
In the Japanese city of Jōetsu a memorial and a ski museum were built in honor of Lerch. The annual “Lerch Festival” ( Japanese レ ル ヒ 祭 , Reruhi matsuri ) takes place there in February .
The city of Asahikawa pays tribute to Lerch's work with a memorial at the city's airport and a permanent exhibition in the Hokuchin Museum.
