Theodor Gaedertz (born December 6, 1815 in Lübeck ; † November 22, 1903 there ) was a German lawyer and art writer.

Life

Gaedertz was a son of the Lübeck Senator Johann Heinrich Gaedertz and his wife Salome Croll. His siblings were Meta and Heinrich Gaedertz . He studied law and already dealt with art history during his studies . After successfully completing his studies, he settled in his hometown as a lawyer in 1840. There he soon advanced to become one of the most important administrative officials of the city ​​and country office .

As a longstanding member of the Lübeck Art Association, Gaedertz was appointed director in 1846. As such, he founded the North German Association in 1850 together with Wilhelm Mertens, director of the Bremen Art Association . As an art historian, Gaedertz was the first to refer to the documentary evidence of the work of the painter Johann Kemmer in Lübeck.

His son Karl Theodor was a literary historian, translator, librarian and Low German poet.
