Theodor Harburger

Theodor Harburger ( September 8, 1887 in Munich - October 15, 1949 in Nahariya , Israel ) was a German-Israeli art historian .

Life

Theodor Harburger was born to the lawyer Isaak Harburger (1849-1919) and his wife Helene (1861-1916). After graduating from Luitpold-Gymnasium in 1906, Harburger began studying at Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich . During his studies he spent the 1907 summer semester in Geneva and the 1908 summer semester in Berlin.

He took seminars in art history with Karl Voll , Hermann von Grauert and others. In 1912 he completed his studies with Voll in Munich with his dissertation " Georg Pencz as an engraver and painter".

After his voluntary service during the First World War , Harburger married Meta (Miriam) Hoch (1895–1979) in 1922. From 1922 to May 1927 he was registered in the trade list as a wholesaler for lining materials. From 1926 to 1932, Harburger prepared a comprehensive inventory of Jewish art objects, cemeteries and synagogues in Bavaria on behalf of the Association of Bavarian Israelite Communities . Harburger created an extensive documentation of Jewish art and cultural goods in Bavaria that were destroyed during the Nazi era . In 1933 Theodor Harburger left Munich with his wife and went with her to Palestine , where he ran a guesthouse in Tiberias and then in Nahariya .

After his death in 1949, his entire estate, including all glass negative plates, was transferred to the Central Archives for the History of the Jewish People (CAHJP) in Jerusalem .
