Theodor Hoppe (pastor)

Theodor Christlieb Jonathan Hoppe (born January 14, 1846 in Wusterwitz , Dramburg district ; † December 28, 1934 ) was a German theologian, doctor of theology and pastor . Theodor Hoppe is considered a pioneer in the care of the physically handicapped.

Life

After completing the village school, he attended the Marienstiftsgymnasium in Stettin and then studied theology at the University of Halle / Saale. Here he became a member of the student union Landsmannschaft Pommerania . In 1872 and 1876, Theodor Hoppe passed his theological exams, and in 1873 he took the exam as a teacher at secondary and high schools for girls . Until 1874 he taught at the middle school in Havelberg , in 1878 at the Wieprecht private school in Berlin. In the same year he took up the post of assistant preacher in the Berlin Jacobi community. In addition, Pastor Hoppe looked after the deaconess mother house Paul-Gerhardt-Stift as a chaplain.

In 1879 he was appointed pastor and head of the deaconess mother house in Oberlinhaus in Nowawes by the central board of the Oberlinverein . Under his leadership, u. a. a toddler school with an attached training seminar, a polyclinic and in 1890 the first hospital in Nowawes.

On May 6, 1886, Ludwig Gerhard, a young physically handicapped man from Berlin, was admitted. This new challenge set the trend for Theodor Hoppe and the Oberlinhaus in Nowawes. Other “ cripples ” found admission and care in the Oberlinhaus, in 1887 a deaf-blind girl as well.

Hoppe and his employees developed a process for holistic rehabilitation that treats the whole person and takes their individual needs into account.
