The International Human Rights Forum Lucerne (IHRF) is a conference for various actors in the field of human rights (politics, NGOs , business, media and science, etc.) It has been organized since 2004. The forum took place annually until 2013, since then every two years. It pursues the goal of promoting society's awareness of human rights. The IHRF is carried out by the Lucerne University of Education (until 2013 Central Switzerland University of Education ) in cooperation with the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs .

The IHRF is headed by Thomas Kirchschläger, the head of the Center for Human Rights Education at the PH Luzern. Around 20 students from the University and the PH Luzern each form the IHRF StudentTeam, which helps to prepare, organize and run the annual forum.

history

The IHRF team with Cherie Blair at the 2007 International Human Rights Forum in Lucerne

Since it was first held in June 2004, the Human Rights Forum has been devoted to a current topic in the field of human rights. As the main speaker on the subject of “Human Rights and Terrorism” (2004), Bertrand Ramcharan , the then interim UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, demanded that fundamental human rights must also be observed in the “ War on Terror ”. In 2007 Cherie Blair campaigned for the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child .

In addition to Federal Councilor Micheline Calmy-Rey , the controversial Islamic scholar Tariq Ramadan was invited to the 2009 forum on “Human Rights and Religions” . The participation of Nestlé President Peter Brabeck-Letmathe , who was asked about human rights and water, was also controversial .

The Swiss Museum of Transport has been the venue for the IHRF since 2010 . Before that, it was held in the Culture and Congress Center Lucerne (KKL) and in 2009 in the SwissLife Arena . Education researcher Lothar Krappmann was invited to be the keynote speaker at the 11th and most recent event on the topic of “Human Rights and Schools” .

Sponsorship award

From 2008 to 2013, the IHRF awarded innovative projects with the “I have a dream” award, based on Martin Luther King's famous speech on August 28, 1963.

IHRF Concert

Several IHRF concerts took place in the KKL, the proceeds of which supported a specific human rights project. After the premiere with the " Sons of Mannheim " around Xavier Naidoo in 2006, the IHRF presented the Jamaican reggae star Jimmy Cliff in 2008 . In May 2009 the 3rd IHRF Concert with Thomas D from “ Die Fantastischen Vier ” took place.

The IHRF Concert Classic took place in 2010, 2011, 2013 and 2017. The Human Rights Orchestra played under the direction of Alessio Allegrini with the two solo pianists Maria João Pires (2010) and Hélène Grimaud (2011). In 2013 the orchestra performed with violinist Isabelle Faust and singer Laurie Rubin . It was accompanied by pianist Imogen Cooper at the benefit concert in May 2017 .
