Life

Theodor Längin was born as the son of Johann Georg Längin and studied German, history and philosophy in Heidelberg , Berlin , Bonn and Freiburg . In 1891 he received his doctorate in Freiburg with the thesis The language of young Herder in its relationship to the written language and completed his studies in the following year with the state examination. After his two-year traineeship at the Grand Ducal Court and State Library in Karlsruhe, between 1894 and 1901 he was employed at the Freiburg University Library as an extraordinary research assistant. From 1896 onwards he worked as a librarian at the General Public Library in Freiburg.

From 1901 to 1904, Längin was the director of the university library in Bern. In 1904 he was appointed head of the printing department of the Grand Ducal Court and State Library and was awarded the title of professor. From 1916 to 1932 Theodor Längin was finally employed as director of the Grand Ducal Court and State Library. This was renamed the Baden State Library during his tenure in 1918. In addition, from 1912, Längin acted as a representative of the Baden libraries on the administrative board of the Deutsche Bücherei in Leipzig . After his retirement he was in charge of the margravial library in the new castle in Baden-Baden until the 1940s, which was retained as the residence of the margrave of Baden after the monarchy was lifted in 1918.

An important aspect of his scientific-library activity was dealing with manuscripts. During his internship, Längin was already describing manuscripts from the Badische Landesbibliothek in a series of publications founded by Wilhelm Brambach . In addition, Längin campaigned for the full exemption of fees for library use as well as regular vacation, continuous working hours and accident insurance for employees. In addition, Längin endeavored to acquire suitable private collections in order to expand the library holdings. During his time as a librarian in Freiburg, Längin dealt with the public library system and its legal status in several articles. For the first time in Germany, Längin hired a female assistant as head of the printing department of the court and state library. In 1920, in his role as director of the Badische Landesbibliothek, Längin introduced a highly modern keyword catalog at the time.
