Theodor Pyl (theologian)

Theodor Pyl (born August 20, 1647 in Stralsund , † July 19, 1723 in Greifswald ) was a German Lutheran theologian and physicist .

Life

Theodor Pyl came from a Stralsund patrician family. He attended high school in Stralsund and studied at the University of Greifswald from 1666 . He later moved to the University of Jena , where he gave lectures in mathematics and obtained his master's degree in 1672 .

After his return to Greifswald, he gave lectures there in 1675 on mathematics and fortress construction . In 1676 he became an adjunct of the philosophical faculty. In the same year, after a trial sermon, he was appointed deacon of the Greifswald Cathedral of St. Nikolai . From 1701 he was professor of theology at Greifswald University. He also dealt with mechanics . The later archdeacon and chronicler Diedrich Hermann Biederstedt wrote: “What he achieved in this subject was valued in his time”. His scientific work includes treatises on planetary motion and accurate timekeeping.

After his death he was buried in Greifswald Cathedral, which also contains an oil painting with his portrait as a deacon.

His son Christoph Pyl (1678–1739) was a pedagogue and historian.
