Theodor Strübin (born April 7, 1908 in Liestal , Canton of Basel-Landschaft , † September 19, 1988 in Arlesheim ) was a Swiss primary school teacher , officer , archaeologist, poet and photographer .

Life

Strübin grew up as the son of the geologist and district teacher Karl Samuel Strübin and his wife Alice Strübin as the eldest of three brothers in Liestal. He attended elementary school in Liestal and the upper secondary school in Basel. In 1925 he began studying at the Evangelical College in Schiers , where he graduated with a teaching certificate.

From 1929 to 1958 he worked as a primary school teacher in Liestal and part-time as a career advisor. After additional training in curative education, he took on a special class from 1959 to 1968. In his free time he devoted himself to various interests: he founded and headed the Liestal scout department, was honorary president of the Liestal traffic and beautification association, member of the board of the Swiss Jura Association and fire brigade instructor .

In the Swiss Army he completed his training as a militia officer and became a transmission officer for a pigeon train . As a passionate mountaineer and SAC member, he trained members of the army in the high mountains as a ski instructor. Strübin did active service as the official photo reporter of the District 4 Territorial Command .

After his retirement he devoted himself more to prehistory and early history and attended lectures at the University of Basel . In 1950 he discovered in Munzach near Liestal what was then the largest Roman manor in north-western Switzerland, which he excavated with his students over several years. He was the initiator of several archaeological excavations in the Baselland and from 1961 to 1971 he was cantonal excavation manager in a part-time position. His public slide presentations made him widely known.

Strübin was friends with many Basel artists of his time and also photographed their works. He was often a guest of Elisabeth Handschin , whom he also admired for her poetry. So he owned some of her works. Her manuscripts and prints of plays and prose as well as the correspondence with Strübin, among others, are kept in the Basel-Land State Archives. Shortly before his death he published «Chnoschpen und Chym», a selection of his poems in dialect and standard German.

Homeland and antiquity researcher

After the discovery of the Roman estate of Munzach , Strübin founded the Munzach Society and the Baselbieter Heimatschutz. As a homeland and antiquity researcher, he gave around 1200 slide shows on various topics (cultural history, Romans), in which he was able to fall back on his rich photo collection.

photographer

Strübin began to deal intensively with photography in the teachers' seminar and remained true to this passion throughout his life. With his camera he captured topics such as customs, everyday life of children and adults in the city and the farmers and important events. His photographs are important and unadulterated contemporary documents.

As a photographer, he created series of pictures and carried out camera experiments, which resulted in atmospheric and artistic photos. From 1938 he also used color slide films. His work comprises around 25,000 slides, negatives and paper pictures. The estate, which was taken over by the Baselland Canton Museum in 1988, was viewed, archived and digitized from 1995 by Barbara Rebmann, the documentalist at the Baselland Archaeological Site Archive and supervisor of the extensive photo and slide collections of the Baselland Museum.
