Theodor Hubert Weber (born January 28, 1836 in Zülpich ; † January 12, 1906 in Bonn ) was the second bishop of the Old Catholic Church in Germany .

Life

Theodor Weber attended high school in Münstereifel and studied in Bonn , Munich and Breslau . As a student he joined the Bonn Wingolf . In 1858 he received his doctorate in philosophy under Franz Peter Knoodt .

The ordination received Weber in 1860 in Wroclaw. From 1862 he worked as a chaplain in Sagan and from 1862 to 1864 also as a religion teacher at the grammar school in Sagan. In 1868 his habilitation took place in Breslau. In 1872 he received an appointment as Professor Extraordinarius of Philosophy and in 1878 Professor Ordinarius . From April 1890 he was professor of philosophy in Bonn and vicar general of Bishop Reinkens .

Weber received the episcopal ordination through Bishop Eduard Herzog and was from August 4, 1895 auxiliary bishop in the German diocese of the Old Catholics. After the death of Hubert Reinkens, he administered the diocese from January 5 to March 3, 1896 as diocese administrator . On March 4, 1896, he was elected bishop with 126 votes out of 128. During his term of office, the founding or consolidation of the Old Catholic associations for nurses, for Old Catholic orphanages, for the support of widows and orphans of Old Catholic clergy, and the establishment of men's and women's associations in the communities. During his term of office, negotiations were held internationally for the 1907 admission of the Polish National Catholic Church in the USA to the Union of Old Catholic Churches in Utrecht , and theological talks were initiated with the Orthodox churches .

In his pastoral letters, Bishop Weber dealt with theological and exegetical questions, but he also addressed current issues such as the family, prayer or the social question at the time. His social and ecumenical work was particularly remarkable at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries.
