Josef Demmel

Josef Demmel (born December 29, 1846 in Regenstauf , † November 11, 1913 in Godesberg ) was the third bishop of the Old Catholic Church in Germany .

Life

Coming from a humble background, the son of a master shoemaker studied philosophy in Regensburg for two semesters in 1867 , and later law in Munich .

From 1870 he was a novice in St. Boniface in Munich. After the First Vatican Council he resigned from the Benedictine order and studied theology in Bonn .

On April 16, 1875, Demmel was ordained a priest by Bishop Joseph Hubert Reinkens . In the same year he became vicar in Passau . In 1878 he was pastor in Erlangen . In the following year (1879) he moved to Bonn .

Demmel became vicar general and diocese administrator in 1906 . In the same year he was elected bishop with 108 of 118 votes. On July 26, 1906, the Archbishop gave him of Utrecht Gerardus Gul , the episcopal ordination .
