Theodor Wolpers

Theodor Wolpers (born March 9, 1925 in Essen ) is a German literary scholar and Anglist .

Life

Theodor Wolpers was born on March 9, 1925 in Essen. After studying English literature , German language and literature , history , and classical philology in Bonn , which he in 1949 Walter F. Schirmer with the promotion finished, habilitation he there in 1959 with a thesis on English hagiography of the Middle Ages. He then taught in Bonn as a private lecturer . In 1962 he got a chair for English studies ( literary studies ) at the English Department of the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen . In 1966 he followed a call to the Georg August University in Göttingen , where he attended the seminar for English philology. Dept. of Modern English Literature worked as a full professor until his retirement in 1995.

The focus of his scientific research was and is on the history of form, motifs and themes of occidental narrative traditions, which he examined from their late antique roots, through medieval legends and Marian poetry to the narrative forms of modern times, and the results of which he presented in numerous publications.

In addition to his extensive text-editing work, Wolpers was co-editor of Anglia, founded in 1878 by Moritz Trautmann and Richard Wülker , from 1965 to 1996 . Journal of English Philology ; since 1965 he has been co-editor of the book series of the same name.

Honors

Theodor Wolpers has been a full member of the Academy of Sciences in Göttingen since 1971 .
