Theodor von Rheden (also: Theodorich, Dietrich von Reden ; * 1492 in Meppen ; † June 28/29 , 1556 in Mainz ) was 1551–1554 as Dietrich II. Bishop of Lübeck .

Life

Theodor von Rheden came from a humble background. He became a cleric in the Osnabrück diocese and had been in the service of Albrecht of Prussia since 1518 . This recommended him to Nikolaus von Schönberg , on whose use he worked in Rome from 1519. He earned a doctorate in ecclesiastical law.

In 1525 he worked again at the court of Albrecht of Prussia. Albrecht of Prussia appointed him as envoy to the Roman Curia . In Rome , Rheden was temporarily punished by the church for his successful work for a Protestant potentate. At the end of 1532 he became canon at the Frauenburger Domstift and represented the chapter in Rome. He carried out the chapter's affairs with the Curia with great zeal and skill. In 1537, as an agent of the chapter, he had to obtain, among other things, the papal breve . In 1539 he returned to Frauenburg . Here he belonged to the close circle of friends of Nicolaus Copernicus , whose estate administrator he was.

On February 10, 1533 he received a canonical to St. Nicolai in Erfurt , later became provost to St. Severus in Erfurt, was provost in Mainz and in 1551 canon in Lübeck. After the death of Jodokus Hodfilter , whom he trusted , the Lübeck Cathedral Chapter elected him Bishop of Lübeck and on June 15, 1551 he was confirmed in this office in Rome. Rheden had already reached a great age when he became bishop and was blind due to old age. He could therefore no longer oppose the increasingly spreading new evangelical doctrine and therefore resigned from office in 1554. He returned to Mainz, where he died.
