Andreas von Barby (born July 24, 1508 in Loburg , † August 3, 1559 in Roskilde ) was a Danish politician and bishop of Lübeck .

Life

Andreas von Barby was an illegitimate child of nobleman Nicolaus von Barby. In 1529 he enrolled at the University of Wittenberg , where he completed his studies with Hieronymus Schurff . He then entered the service of Duke Magnus von Sachsen-Lauenburg . Through the mediation of Melchior Kling , he became Christian III's Danish royal councilor in 1542 . In this position he could gain the trust of Christian III. and had great influence as German Chancellor . On November 8, 1543 he became provost of the cathedral in Roskilde and associated with it conservator of the University of Copenhagen . He later became provost of the cathedral in Viborg and provost of the Poor Clare monastery in Roskilde. Furthermore, he received some goods as a fief , was raised to the nobility in 1554 and was later Imperial Councilor.

After the resignation of Lübeck Bishop Dietrich von Rheden in 1555, Christian III recommended. emphatically Andreas von Barby as his successor. Although Barby did not receive papal confirmation, he was elected bishop by the cathedral chapter on November 20, 1556 . In Lübeck, however, he was hardly present because he was also doing Danish state business. He had never married, but he seems to have had illegitimate children, to whom he left a great fortune. A Hans Barby was killed in a duel in Nyborg in 1577. Andreas von Barby was buried in Roskilde Cathedral, where an epitaph was set for him.
